WhatThen is built to help you think through a decision — quietly, and mostly anonymously.
We collect as little as we can, and we never sell your personal data.
This page explains, in plain language, what we hold and why.
You can weigh a dilemma without an account — your contact details are only needed if you choose to be reminded how your decision went, or want access to your Reflection Wall so you can be identified. Your private notes are yours alone — you can delete anything and everything, at any time. We use what you share to run WhatThen, make your questions more relevant, send a reminder only if you asked for one, and understand overall usage so we can improve the product. We never sell your data or share it with advertisers.

What we collect if you choose to share it
- Contact preferences — an email address (or messaging handle) only if you opt in to a follow-up reminder on the check-in step.
- Decision & outcome data — the dilemmas you weigh, how you leaned, what you decided, and how it turned out if you tell us.
- Your private notes — anything you write in a reflection note. These are private by default, never shown to anyone, and never attached to your name.
- Profile basics — optional details such as age range, relationship status, and life stage, used only to make the questions you see more relevant.
Why we can use your data
We rely on your consent for the optional things you switch on — follow-up reminders and any profile details you add. We rely on our legitimate interest in running and improving WhatThen for essential operation, security, and understanding general usage. Where the law requires consent for non-essential cookies, we ask first. You can withdraw consent at any time from Your Profile.

If needed, we’ll ask for your consent to non-essential cookies. You can change your cookie preferences at any time.
Sharing your dilemma with others
If you suggest a dilemma for the shared wall, or your lean/outcome contributes to what other people see (for example, “62% leaned yes”), that contribution is always anonymous — it is never shown with your name, contact details, or anything that identifies you.
How we protect your data
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data. No method is perfectly secure, but we work to keep what you share safe. At this early stage, most of what you enter stays in your own browser, on your device.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account or reflections are active. You can delete your Reflection Wall, individual entries, or your entire account and all associated data at any time from Your Profile — deletion is instant and permanent.
Your rights
Wherever you are, you can ask us to access, correct, export, or delete your data. If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK, you have specific rights under the GDPR / UK GDPR (including the right to object to or restrict processing, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority). Most of these are instant, self-service actions from Your Profile; for anything else, email hello@whatthen.com.
Children
WhatThen is not intended for children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU/EEA), and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under these ages.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves. For material changes, we’ll give clearer notice than a quiet date update.
